Mature males and females reproduce during the breeding season; such events vary among crabs depending on suitable factors. The eggs enter an incubation period which varies depending on species and other environmental factors such as temperature. After the incubation period, the females release the planktonic larvae into the planktonic community to complete their developmental stages and dispersal through the water column. Crabs have two different forms of planktonic larvae, the first one called zoea and the second one called megalopa. Zoea is a shrimp-like creature with dorsal, vertical, and lateral spines in the carapace. Megalopa is a more crab-like structure with an extended abdomen. Generally, crabs have several zoeal stages followed by only one megalopa stage. I believe in studying several biological aspects is very essential to understand the organism from different dimension and its role in the community. Such an approach can have a better outcome to inform both fisheries management and the establishment of conservation measures. My research also focuses on intertidal fisheries and the impact of human activities on the intertidal community. I am also interested in studying adaptation/behavior in the reproduction and feeding of crabs. The interaction between organisms is another area that attracts my attention along with the effects of environmental factors on crabs in the Arabian Gulf, especially under the influence of the climate change. I focus my research locally in Kuwait to better understand crab species, and to gain a wider knowledge of the ecology of the intertidal habitats, in the northwest Arabian Gulf. It is very wise advice, and I was lucky enough to study crabs. They are truly very interesting creatures by all means, not only for crab biologists but also to the general public as well. It is hard to miss their mounts on the shore and ignore how they wait patiently to emerge from burrows to feed. They are very curious creatures with very interesting personalities and they are really fun and wonderful to watch. I am fascinated by their wide diversity as they come in different sizes, shapes and found in aquatic and terrestrial environments. These problems are either results of natural phenomena like global warming and sea-level rise or as a result of human activities. Beach recreation Nothing like going to the beach to relax, enjoy, swim, and explore the intertidal zone during low tide. In doing so, people sometimes step on animals or destroy their homes. So be careful, watch your step and make sure to turn the rocks back to their position -if you are exploring a rocky shore-. It might be a simple action, but in reality -putting the rocks back-, has a major impact in reducing habitat disturbance. Coastal development Half of the world's population lives in the coastal area and that adds stress to the coastal habitats. For example, reclamation or removing the rocks and sand from the intertidal zone for coastal development is affecting the intertidal habitat. Gleaning activities Gleaning is a technical term used to describe collecting intertidal organisms from the shore. These creatures are playing certain roles in their environment. So, removing them may create an imbalance in intertidal ecosystems. Pollution In Kuwait, the oil industry, with all its components (exploration, production, and transporting), is the main stressor for the marine ecosystem. These activities increased the contamination of Kuwaiti waters and introduced chemical pollutants in the coastal environment. Furthermore, desalination, power plants, seaports, and waste outlets act as additional stressors in the coastal marine environment.
